Kick-off your afternoon with a scenic journey through the Salish Sea aboard our comfortable tour vessel on your way to Bute Inlet, the ancestral territory of the Homalco First Nation. Upon arrival at Orford Bay, Homalco guides will welcome you to their territory and you will then load onto a shuttle bus enroute to your first viewing tower overlooking the rivers where the salmon run and the grizzlies hunt.
Although sightings are less likely than our full-day tours and never guaranteed in any case, the grizzlies are very active this time of year and there is still a very real possibility of catching a glimpse of these incredible animals as they forage, roam or rest.
The Homalco People, the “people of the fast-running waters,” have been stewards of these lands and waters since time immemorial. We invite you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors and see the beauty of bears through our eyes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The following information offers what to expect in a TYPICAL year (note that climate change significantly impacts weather and bear behaviour, which is our best interpretation in constantly changing conditions).
- Brief Bears of Bute Tours operate on vessels chartered via Qaya Way West Water Taxis and do not have the option of outdoor seating. Boat skippers are employees of Qaya Way West while tour guides are employees of Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours.
- September typically has the highest number of bears and is the busiest time for visitor volume. The weather begins to adjust to our annual period of rain, which identifies BC’s Coastal Temperate Rainforest
- Despite shorter days and more variable weather, October offers intimate, quiet, and spectacular fall bear viewing. The early fall colours and more dynamic lighting can lend to exceptional photography conditions
- The Brief Bears of Bute tour is all about the grizzly viewing experience. While you may see whales and other marine mammals in transit to Bute Inlet, there is no time allotted to pause to view these animals.
